This is part of a series of posts in which your humble, soon to graduate blogger will wax poetic on the things that make Tuscaloosa and The University great.
This one probably makes no sense to half of the people who read this, and pisses the other half off, but I love severe weather. It probably stems from my childhood appetite for tragedy. My favorite show was Rescue: 911, and my favorite movie was, is, and shall always be Twister.
That being said, something about the Tuscaloosa area draws storms to it, and always has. Thus one of our favorite pastimes is to sit around on the balcony with a case of brew and watch the storms. On these days of severe weather, we live for the Guru of Alabama Weather James Spann to utter the words “Classic Hook Echo,” the term used to describe a tornadic radar signature.
To anyone who’s had their homes or families ripped away by twisters in Dixie Alley, I’m sorry for your loss. That being said, I’m still going to miss the frequency with which I get to sit out on a spring or fall day and watch ominous clouds roll by just waiting for Spann to utter those magic words. Birmingham or Oxford, wherever I end up will still have its fair share of storms, but it just won’t be the same.
