Triple Crown for Big Brown?

As most of you know, today Big Brown will attempt to complete the Triple Crown of horse racing by winning the third and final leg, the Belmont Stakes.  Big Brown will start from the #1 position, which apparently is a pretty favorable spot in past Stakes.

In another stroke of luck for Big Brown, his main competitor in the field today, Casino Drive, has been scratched from the field with a bruised hoof.  The question now stands, is this a legitimate Triple Crown?  Big Brown smoked the formidable field at the Derby, but he did so at the Preakness against admittedly weaker competition.  Now with Casino Drive left in the stable at the post, I’m sure the naysayers will come out against Big Brown should he win today.  I can’t say I’d disagree.

Despite Big Brown’s pounding of the field, if he pulls off the Triple Crown today I’ll be ecstatic.  It hasn’t happened since Affirmed in 1978, therefore I have yet to witness a Triple Crown winner in my existence on Earth.  Also, it would come as a much needed boost to a sport struggling with on-air horse deaths, and doping allegations.  Besides, you have to love Big Brown’s trainer, Rick Dutrow’s story.  Only in America can a guy go from sleeping in a horse stall doing drugs to winning horse racing’s most prized races in a matter of a decade.  Suck on that Obama.

That being said, the last time I wrote about horse racing, I received this lovely addition to our civilized discourse so perhaps I should just keep my mouth shut………….or not:

How insensitive and remarkably ignorant you are…..rot in hell asshole

Thanks AJ, wherever you are!
